When 14-year-old Tyre Sampson fell to his death from an amusement-park ride in Florida last month, graphic video of the tragedy ricocheted across social media.
Tyre fell during the descent of a 430-foot-tall ride called the Orlando FreeFall at Florida’s Icon Park, state and county officials said. Manual adjustments were made to restraints that lower over riders’ shoulders to create more space for larger riders, according to state officials.
The ride’s sensor was also adjusted to satisfy the ride’s electronic safety mechanism, allowing the ride to commence despite it being unsafe, according to an investigative report completed by forensic engineers and released by state officials Monday. Tyre, who was over the weight limit to ride the drop tower, “slipped through the gap between the seat and harness,” according to the report.
